Writing for Your Future

For the next 10 days we will be focusing on writing short essays for your future. These questions come from various college application/scholarship forms from around the U.S. Some are typical others are very unique. The biggest thing is each day your assignment will be worth 25 points and will have a word range that it must fall between. If you are gone one day you will need to get caught up. For today we will start out simple:

Question 1: What single word best describes you and why?

Requirements:
Creative Title - 5 points
Body between 200-250 words - 20 points

One Medium Suitcase

Scenario:

You must pack your things and leave this place forever, never to return to your home, friends, and family. You have one hour to pack everything that you can into a medium sized suitcase before they come and take you away. There are some rules however, you cannot take anything electronic or technology driven. Where you are going there are no means to connect to internet much less power. What will you take with you?

Make a list of at least 10 things you would take with you and explain why you would take the item in at least two sentences. Remember that you must have room for everything so large items may not be as important as smaller things.

Suitcase dementions: 24 inches tall by 18 inches wide by 10 inches deep!

Get to filling! This assignment must be posted by Friday, March 1st.

Telling Tales

Family get-togethers can get very interesting, at least for my family, and depending on which side of the family is getting together. One thing they all have in common is that they usually end up with everyone gathered in the living room telling some pretty interesting stories. Think about the most interesting story you have ever heard at your family get-togethers. May be is so outrageous that it is unbelievable! Retell that story on your blog. (Please keep the topic school appropriate) 300 word minimum

You are only to tell the story but be very descriptive! Use some of those sparkle words you came up with. The story may even be about an event that occurred at your family get-together.

Looking Up - Due Friday Februray 22nd

Typical questions on a scholarship or college application have to deal with naming someone that you look up to, a mentor or role model. I remember always using my mom as my role model but that always seemed so generic, like everyone probably said their mom or dad or some other relative. Your assignment this week is to write about 3 people that you look up to but here is the catch:

The person you look up to must be searchable in an encyclopedia (or for technology purposes 'wikipedia').

You will need to do some formal research on each person you choose (and cite those resources in MLA format at the end of your blog). For each individual that you look up to you then need to write a paragraph of at least 200 words. Here is some advice for this assignment:

Saying that you look up to Martin Luther King Jr. because he fought for Civil Rights doesn't work for this assignment. For this creative writing assignment you must go deeper. Answer questions like:

What about this individual amazes me?
What about this individual makes me want to become a better person?
What about this individual inspires me?
How do I want to be like this individual?

Tell us what each person has done to deserve your admiration.
